"Since moving into his own flat our relative has been given more opportunity experiencing more life skills.

He now makes more choices for himself. Examples of this are , with supervision, he now helps select his own groceries etc for the week when out shopping, putting them into his trolley and then putting them away in his flat. He loads and unloads his clothes from the washing machine and helps put them onto the airing stand. He selects and prepare his breakfast and lunch time snacks , thoroughly enjoys stirring whatever is being cooked, washes and dries his plates and cutlery and puts it all back where it belongs. He is responsible to help keep his flat clean and tidy and has a weekly flat cleaning day with staff supervision.

His own space enables him to choose to watch tv, listen to the radio or watch a favourite DVD in his room or join the other residents.

The position of his flat lends to views over some fields and he enjoys watching the activities that go on there."

“Thank you to Oakfield for giving my brother Anthony the chance to move into his wonderful new flat. He’s so much happier. Independent living gives him much more freedom to make his own choices on meals, trips out, holidays, clothes he wants to wear and at times when he wants to. And he’s still supported by the lovely carers if and when he needs anything.”

Nanda informed staff that she thinks her flat is nice, and that it gives her more space to do what she wants to do. Nanda’s favourite thing to do in her flat is drawing and colouring at her own table. She feels happy and has enjoyed living in Supported Living for over a year. Nanda has developed a number of skills, including preparing her own food and making her own pizza. She also enjoys going food shopping for herself.

Gary informed staff that the things he likes most about his flat is his cooking, his washing machine, and his television. His favourite thing to do is to cook food in his flat. Gary has been happy living in supported living for over a year. Gary has developed skills such as cooking, washing, washing up, cleaning and how to do his weekly shopping.

Anthony informed staff that he enjoys watching TV in the quiet in his chair, and that he loves that his flat has plenty of space. Anthony’s favourite thing to do in his flat is watching TV. He likes having his own space, his own shower and kitchen. He has developed skills such as washing up, making a cup of tea, putting his washing in the machine, and cleaning up.

“I have noticed that Nanda seems very happy about her new flat. She enjoys going food shopping and preparing her meals and choosing what she would like for lunch. Nanda enjoys doing her ironing with support and keeps her flat tidy.”

“Gary often speaks about his flat and loves to spend his free time in there and invite people up for tea. Gary has become more independent since moving to Supported Living. Gary has learnt new life skills such as cooking, doing his washing and a weekly food shop which he loves to do. Gary is still just as excited about his flat now compared to when he first moved in.

The Easton Maudit refurbishment project is important and allows the people we support to gain independence and overall have a better quality of life. The people we support like Gary are also learning about responsibility, not just independence.”

“Anthony always tells staff he likes his new flat and will always tell staff if he needs something new or has something new. Anthony has been doing well with washing up and making his lunches with prompts from staff. Anthony enjoys his own space away from people but will still socialise which is nice. Anthony has learnt a lot of independence since being in his new flat.”

Gary informed that he thinks his flat is very nice. He loves his CD's, bed, kitchen and new furniture. Gary enjoys watching TV in his new flat, as well as making and eating meals. With support from staff, Gary has developed skills such as completing the washing and laundry, cooking and cleaning. Gary informed me he is happy with his new flat, and would like to buy a small Christmas tree.

"He feels that he appreciates his space more. Gary seems to take more pride in his new flat. Gary has enjoyed inviting his friends round to his flat for a cup of tea. Gary has enjoyed purchasing things for his new flat like his pictures and a record player. He enjoys supported living - doing his own washing and trying new things for lunch. Gary has also enjoyed food shopping and his click & collect. His flat has allowed him to be more independent, and have more pride in his own belongings and appearance. He gets very excited talking about things like his food shopping and cooking. It has had a massive impact on Gary and shows that he can do a lot for himself. It has allowed him to reach his full potential."
